Britain is the first country to notice a cluster of monkeypox cases outside Africa in May. The results of a recent study conducted were published in the journal BMJ.

Researchers from the UK Health Security Agency evaluated 2,746 individuals who tested positive for monkeypox between May and August. The researchers used two different statistical models and observed that it took an average of roughly eight days for symptoms to manifest after a patient was exposed to the infection. This delay was typically longer than the time between the onset of symptoms in the first patient and the contact case called a serial interval.

The study found that the estimated median serial interval was shorter than the incubation period, indicating significantly more pre-symptomatic transmission than previously believed.

The study calculated that 53 % of the cases were spread before the victim displayed any symptoms of monkeypox. A maximum of four days could have passed before symptoms appeared, it was claimed.

Experts stated that more studies need to confirm the same and vaccination-based disease elimination should be considered seriously.
